Brussels, Belgium - RELP and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) are proud to announce a new Cooperation Agreement aimed at enhancing clean energy solutions and supporting sustainable development in Emerging Market and Developing Economies (EMDEs).
PRESS RELEASE | September 23rd, 2024
This Cooperation Agreement stems from the growing collaboration between RELP, GEAPP, and other organisations involved in the new Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) bidding programme in Barbados. It crystallises our progress in the country and seeks to expand these efforts throughout the Caribbean and other target regions.
The primary objective of this partnership is to establish a framework that harnesses the expertise and resources of both organisations to support governments in implementing competitive procurement programmes for BESS. This will involve evaluating the financial resources available to ensure the effective and efficient execution of the activities outlined in this agreement.
“This new milestone in RELP’s and GEAPP’s cooperation contributes to accelerating ongoing efforts and opening new opportunities in more emerging and developing markets to support the deployment of BESS and renewables at scale through tailored and effective competitive procurement solutions,” said Sebastian Kind, RELP’s Founder and CEO.
This partnership is aligned with the mission of the BESS Consortium, founded by GEAPP and its member countries, which aims to aggregate a 5GW pipeline of BESS projects by the end of 2024. RELP will serve as a key technical partner, assisting in the design and implementation of effective competitive procurement programmes.
The BESS Consortium, which launched at COP28 with 16 first-mover countries and over 19 technical and resource partners, has already demonstrated traction by getting projects off the ground and accelerating deployment in India, Malawi, Vietnam, and Barbados through four flagship projects, totalling approximately 200 megawatts (MW).
Woochong Um, CEO of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet said: "This partnership underscores our mission to support sustainable and equitable energy transitions in emerging markets, addressing the global climate crisis and reducing inequality. It also showcases GEAPP’s ability to support governments to expedite competitive procurement processes as part of the BESS Consortium, and is a testament of our Alliance’s commitment to ensuring that countries can meet their energy, climate, and development goals sustainably."
The Parties will maintain regular coordination to ensure the successful implementation of their joint initiative, with a focus on maximising the long-term benefits of energy transition for the communities they serve.
